Latest UK workplace death stats confirmed – 144 deaths in 2017/18

The Health and Safety Executive has published its latest statistics for workplace deaths in the UK, with the tragic loss of 144 lives in 2017/18.
As is typically the case, construction, agriculture/fishing and manufacturing have proved to be the most dangerous industries, with more than 50 per cent of the total at-work deaths occurring in those sectors.
Falls from height comprise 35 of the deaths, the most common factor, followed by being struck by a moving vehicle.
The encouraging news is the significant reduction in at-work deaths over the past 40 years. This chart, from the HSE, shows the downward trend:
But 144 deaths is still 144 too many, and it is vital that procedures continue to be improved, and mistakes continue to be learned from where necessary.
